Walmart of Central America recently opened the first of 5 new hibrid stores, called Maxi Pali, combining a warehouse concept with discount grocery store prices.  It includes the traditional Pali fare such as canned goods, fresh meat, fruits and vegetables and adds clothing, electronics, camping, hardware, banking (there is a Banpro branch inside the store) a a few other low key conveniences.  The air conditioned store also has public restrooms and a decent effort to keep them clean.  The first store is in León, Nicaragua.  The company promises the four other Maxi Palí stores in Nicaragua before the end of the year 2011 in Rivas, Masaya, Estelí and Managua.

Walmart de Centroamérica inauguró recientemente la primera de 5 nuevas tiendas con el concepto combinado de una bodega y un supermercado con precios bajos.  Incluye lo acostumbrado de Palí como abarrotes, carne, fruta y verduras y agrega ropa, electrodomésticos, equipo de ‘camping’, artículos ferreteros, y un banco (Banpro tiene una sucursal dentro de la tienda) y una que otra conveniencia.  Hay buen aire acondicionado y baños para el público.  Al parecer están haciendo esfuerzos decentes de mantenerlos limpios.  La primera tienda se ubica en León, Nicaragua.  Walmart ha prometido construir 4 más Maxi Pali en Nicaragua antes que termine el año 2011 en Rivas, Masaya, Estelí y Managua.

>I hate to exaggerate but I ate the best pizza in León, Nicaragua last night and the night before.  You probably won’t believe where I bought it at.  It’s in Central Park, right next to the church.  It’s called Pizza León.  Not much on looks but the goods are good!  You can get a slice for C$15 ($0.75) or a whole pizza for C$180 ($9) – the specialty pizza like the one in the picture.  A ham or pepperoni and cheese goes for C$150.  Nightlife and entertainment in Nicaragua is close by.

Sin miras a exagerar, me lanzé la mejor pizza en León, Nicaragua anoche y ante anoche.  Quizá no vayas a creer dónde me la comí…en el Parque Central, al lado de la iglesia.  Se llama Pizza León.  Quizá no tenga el mejor ambiance pero la pizzá está fuera de órbito!  Un pedazo (“un eslay” como dicen en Nicaragua) cuesta C$15 ($0.75).  Una pizza entera (especial como la de la foto) cuesta C$180 ($9).  Si solo pedís jamón o peperoni, cuesta C$150.  Entretenimiento y diversion están cerca….

We went with Aaron Lamy to eat supper tonight at El Terrazo Mediterrano, in León, Nicaragua.  It’s a nice little place with good steak.  There is a variety in the menu as you can see in the pictures.

There is a nice cut of beek in Archduke sauce – C$165 ($8.00)

Next there is spaghetti with chicken and basil – C$135 ($6.85)

Finally I had the shrimp in garlic sauce C$185 ($9.15).

Coca-Cola or sweetened lemon tea costs C$15 a drink.

Should you leave a tip?  Note the note (second to bottom) that says that “the dishes are served with rice and crudity”.  Thus “Tipping is voluntary”.  OK?

I saw a sign urging me ‘not to travel to get my quesillos’ (string cheese smothered with onions in vinegar and covered with sweet cream and sprinkled with salt, carefully wrapped in a tortilla or served on a plate) but rather eat them there in León (near El Colegio La Salle). OK. I accepted. They were good. If you like La Paz Centro quesillos, you will be pleased. If you prefer Nagarote quesillos, like I do, you will give it a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. If all else fails and you are not traveling to Managua, go ahead and give it a try. It will get you out of a ‘I want quesillo’ jam.

Vi un rótulo que me decía que no ‘viajara para conseguir mis quesillos’ (ya sabés que es un quesillo).  Mejor los conseguiera en León (cerca del Colegio La Salle).  Va pues.  Acepté.  Estaban buenos.  Si a vos te gustan los quesillos de La Paz Centro, te van a gustar.  Si preferís quesillos de Nagarote, como a mi me gustan, de 1 a 10 los darás un 6.  Bueno, para sacarte de apuros y si no tenés un viaje hacia Managua, andate a Quesillos Típicos de Mi tierra.  Quizá te satisfagan cuando sentís “YO QUIERO UN QUESILLO”.
