Little chair <…> silla pequeña

As I was wondering through the backwoods of Los Cerros, Rivas (near the Nicaragua tourism area known as Tola), I saw this little wooden chair, typically called a ‘grandmother’ chair here in Nicaragua.  This one was special though cause it was not ‘grandmother’ size but rather granddaughter size.

Mientras vagaba por la selva de Los Cerros, Rivas (cerca del tremendo lugar de turismo en Nicaragua que se llama Tola), vi esta silla de madera, típicamente conocida como una ‘abuelita’ en Nicaragua.  Sin embargo, esta era especial porque no era del tamaño ‘abuelita’ sino de nietacita.

Milk production is a big industry in Nicaragua.  The country is one of only three Latin American countries that is self-sufficient is milk production.  In recent years, the annual production has increased at the rhythm of 4.7% per year.  The departments of Rivas, Chinandega, León and Chontales are the big producers.

La producción de leche es una industria importante en Nicaragua.  De hecho, el país es uno de solo tres paises de latinoamérica que es autosuficiente en este rubro.  En años recientes, la producción anual de leche ha aumentado al ritmo de 4.7% por año.  Los departamentos de Rivas, Chinandega, León y Chontales son los productores grandes.

Mérida, Ometepe used to be full of dairy cows and coffee plantations.  The locals say that the milk was so abundant that the farmers gave it away to anyone who asked.  Long gone those days, sadly.  However, I did still have a decent breakfast of eggs, tortilla and coffee.

Mérida Ometepe de antaño contaba con vacas lecheras y haciendas de café.  Cuentan que regalaba la leche a la gente, había tanta abundancia.  Hace mucho aquellos tiempos, tristemente.  Sin embargo, logré todavía comer un desayuno decente de huevos, tortilla y café.

I saw this really cool looking “Salón del Reino de los Testigos de Jehová” in Mérida, Ometepe.  The garden was really impressive!

Vi este “Salón del Reino de los Testigos de Jehová” en Mérida, Ometepe.  El jardín estuvo bien impresionante.

100th anniversary Titanic<…>100 aniversario Titanic

This is the Nicaraguan tribute to the 100th anniversary of the fateful voyage of the Titanic.  Fortunately, the outcome here, in Chinandega, Nicaragua, was far from a shipwreck.

Está aquí un homenaje Nicaragüense al 100 aniverario del viaje destrazoso del Titanic.  Afortunadamente el final aquí, en Chinadega, Nicaragua, no resultó en naufragio.


World’s largest hammock<…>Hamaca más grande del mundo

Granada, Nicaragua will be home to the biggest hammock ever made in Nicaragua – 25 yards long and 7 yards wide with seating capacity for 60 people.  It will cost $1,000 + labor costs.  Children with physical disabilities will collaborate along with other school age children.

Earlier last year, a large hammock 12 yards long and 2 1/2 yards wide with seating capacity for 17 people was sold for $400 (picture above).

Nicaraguan artisans are very skilled in the making of hammocks and other popular items with tourists visiting the ‘land of lakes and volcanoes’.

Granada, Nicaragua será el lugar de nacimiento de la hamaca más grande del mundo – 25 metros de largo y 7 metros de ancho con capacidad para 60 personas.  Costará $1,000 + gastos de labor.  Niños con discapacidades colaborarán con otros escolares en la fabricación de esta hamaca.

El año pasado, una hamaca granda de 12 metros de largo y 2 1/2 metros de ancho con capacidad para 17 personas fue vendido por $400 (vea foto arriba).

La artesanía de Nicaragua es muy avanzada, especializada en hacer hamacas y otros artículos populares con los turistas visitando ‘la tierra de lagos y volcanes’.
