The Factory

Ok.  You’re in Managua and somebody invites you to The Factory.  Cheesecake Factory in Managua?  No.  It’s The Factory, steak and seafood restaurant in the Inter Continental Hotel in the heart of Managua.  So, is it worth it?  Check out the pictures:

The restaurant decor is top notch.   Everything was well planned and nicely decorated in this restaurant.  You can sit inside or outside in the hotel courtyard, close to the pool.  Service is excellent as well: friendly waiters, very attentive to the customers, without going over the top.

I had the imported 16 oz. NY Strip steak with a black pepper sauce (which I soon replaced with the Nicaraguan favorite – chimichurri) with cross cut fries.  My wife chose the jumbo shrimp in butter and garlic sauce with a medley of grilled vegetables.  Presentation and quality were excellent.  The sauces left a little to be desired, in my humble opinion.  As far as the steak goes, 3/4 done seems to be getting rarer and rarer lately although the cut was an inch think so that is to be expected. I only ate half of it…and the waiter gave me a load of that fresh bread…to make a really tasty sandwich later!

The Factory is not cheap.  It is one of the nicer restaurants in Managua, Nicaragua at the moment.  Service was great and the food was good.  Great ambiance.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it an 8.5.

McWrap NICA

American made McDonald’s has a strong presence in Nicaragua.  There are various stores in the Managua area: outside on the west side of Metrocentro, Food Court Metrocentro, Bello Horizonte, Plaza España and Food Court Plaza Inter.  In what I would call a bold and creative move, McDonald’s introduces fare with a Nica flavor: McWrap NICA: that is egg, onion and peppers, rice and beans, sausage and ripe plantain wrapped up in a flour tortilla.  Sounds DELICIOUS!

Go Green

Salads haven’t really been the typical fare for Nicaragua.  Getting a good salad used to be kind of tough.  However, times have changed and so have tastes and now there are some good offerings.  In the Metrocentro Food Court, for example, you can eat at Go Green.  I have tried a couple of their daily combos: salad, drink and chips for $4.95.  The best, so far, has been Monday’s Go Club with a really good honey mustard dressing.  What you see in the picture is Wednesday’s Go Tijuana.  Not as tasty but decent.

Looking around the food court, you can get salads in different varieties at: Pollo Campero, Go Green, Quiznos, RostiPollo, Tip Top, Burger Kind and Pollo Estrella.  Good green lettuce salads are hear to stay.

I was wrong…GHOP. Me equivoqué…GHOP

About three years ago, I visited GHOP, an IHOP look alike en Camino de Oriente in Managua, Nicaragua. I gave it six months…

Original post

Guess what?  It’s still there are going strong.  From other comments, it has had a reasonable acceptance among the Managua eatery crowd.  So, I decided to give it another try.

We had one of the lunch specials: $4.95 for soup, salad, drink and dessert.  As the pictures indicate, it was really good!  My apologies to GHOP (George’s House of Pancakes) and may you have years of success to come….

Burger King Santo Domingo

I went to the Burger King in front of the Galerías Santo Domingo mall in Managua, expecting a quick filler-up before heading off to Granada, Nicaragua.  I was unpleasantly surprised.  This conceptual Burger King store has a lot of good things going for it.  For example, the modern interiors are appealing and the late-night hours are useful for Friday and Saturday.  However, the food was deceptionally expensive for the small, measly portions.  I mean I could hardly find the hamburger and taste it in the Whopper Jr. that I bought.  You can check out the prices here:  BK prices

I know, it’s only Burger King.  However, on a scale of 1 to 10, this one gets a 5.

Roadhouse Drinks & Food

If you are in Granada, Nicaragua and wish you went to TGI Friday’s in Managua, have no fear.  Roadhouse Drinks & Food will more than satisfy your urge.  In fact, if you look at the picture, there are remnants of a TGI Friday’s interior, complete with a Frankenstein doll (probably copped by an ex-employee at you know where).  The menu has typical American fare with great appetizers, decent drinks and good food.  We had a chicken sandwich and a hamburger.  They were both really good.  Check out those fries!  You can see the prices here.

On a scale of 1 to 10:  7

La Casa del Café in the Galerías de Santo Domingo mall in Managua, Nicaragua, is a great place to have some good coffee and a nice desert.  It’s one of the four different branches that Casa del Café has in Managua: the airport (leaving), Metrocentro and in Los Robles.  It’s the newest and most modernly designed.  Definitely worth a visit!

Hippos

Hippo’s en Las Galerías de Santo Domingo (Managua) has a nice mixed plate of meat: sausage, rib tips and chicken wings, in a pretty good BBQ sauce.  That cost me $11.85.  The iced tea (no refills :( ) cost $1.75.  It was good but not worth that much, I must admit.  I was saved by the Credomatic 40% off on February 14th special.  Otherwise, I would be regretting it.

Hippo’s has good food and appetizers but is overpriced.  On 1 to 10, I’ll give it a 6 (for overpriced).

Si no, estuviera arrepentido.
